How to Spot Storm Damage on Your Roof After a Florida Hurricane

Why Post-Storm Inspections Matter

Every hurricane season, thousands of Florida Panhandle homeowners discover roof damage weeks or months after a storm — often when it's too late for an insurance claim. The window for filing is limited, and hidden damage gets worse with every rain.

At Complete Roofing, we've inspected over 1,500 roofs after storms across Navarre, Gulf Breeze, and Pensacola. Here's exactly what to look for.

7 Signs of Roof Storm Damage

1. Missing or Lifted Shingles

The most obvious sign. Walk your yard and look up — if you see bare patches or shingles that are curled or flapping, you have wind damage. Check your gutters and yard for shingle debris.

2. Granule Loss in Gutters

After a hailstorm, check your gutters and downspouts. If you see piles of dark, sand-like granules, your shingles have been stripped of their protective coating. This accelerates aging dramatically.

3. Dented or Cracked Roof Vents

Metal vents, pipe boots, and ridge caps are often the first things damaged by hail. If these are dented, your shingles likely took similar hits — they're just harder to see from the ground.

4. Water Stains on Ceilings or Walls

Brown spots, bubbling paint, or damp drywall inside your home mean water is already getting in. Even small stains can indicate significant roof damage above.

5. Soft Spots on the Roof Deck

If you can safely walk your roof (or have a professional do it), soft or spongy spots mean the decking below is water-damaged and possibly rotting. This is a serious structural issue.

6. Flashing Damage Around Chimneys and Walls

Wind can peel back or loosen the metal flashing around chimneys, walls, and skylights. Even a small gap lets water in and causes major interior damage over time.

7. Debris Impact Marks

Fallen branches and flying debris leave marks even when they don't puncture through. Impact bruises on shingles weaken the seal and lead to future leaks.

What to Do If You Spot Damage

1Document everything — take photos from the ground and inside your attic

2Don't wait — Florida insurance claims have filing deadlines

3Call a licensed roofer — not a door-to-door "storm chaser"

4Get a written inspection report — you'll need this for your insurance claim
