Hurricane Roof Preparation Checklist for Florida Homeowners

S
By Shelly Taylor · May 20, 2025

Start Early — Don't Wait for the First Named Storm

Every year, we get a flood of calls in August and September from homeowners who waited too long. By then, every roofer in the panhandle is booked solid. Start your hurricane prep in April or May.

Pre-Hurricane Season Checklist

Exterior Roof Inspection

  • Walk your yard and look at your roof from all four sides
  • Check for missing, cracked, or curling shingles
  • Look for dark streaks (algae) or moss growth
  • Inspect flashing around chimneys, vents, and walls
  • Check pipe boots and vent covers for cracks
  • Clear debris from valleys and around penetrations
  • Trim tree branches within 6 feet of the roof

Gutter System

  • Clean all gutters and downspouts
  • Repair any loose, sagging, or damaged gutter sections
  • Ensure downspouts direct water at least 4 feet from foundation
  • Check gutter guards if installed — make sure they're secure

Attic Inspection

  • Look for daylight coming through the roof deck
  • Check for water stains on rafters or sheathing
  • Ensure attic ventilation is clear and functional
  • Verify insulation isn't blocking soffit vents

Documentation

  • Review your homeowner's insurance policy
  • Know your wind/hurricane deductible
  • Take dated photos of your roof's current condition
  • Keep your roofer's contact info accessible
  • Save your insurance company's claims phone number

When to Get a Professional Inspection

If your roof is more than 10 years old, or if you've never had a professional inspection, get one before hurricane season. A licensed roofer can spot issues that aren't visible from the ground:

  • Soft decking beneath shingles
  • Improperly sealed nail heads
  • Worn pipe boot gaskets
  • Inadequate nailing patterns

Emergency Preparation

If a Hurricane Is Approaching

1Secure any loose items on or near the roof (satellite dishes, solar decorations)

2Verify your tarps and emergency supplies are accessible

3Take fresh photos of your roof as a "before" record

4Fill your vehicles with gas (power outages affect gas pumps)

5Save your roofer's phone number — you'll need it after the storm

After the Storm

1Stay off the roof until conditions are safe

2Document all damage with photos before any cleanup

3Call your insurance company to file a claim

4Contact a licensed local roofer for inspection (not a storm chaser)
